Learn About Dog Wheelchairs. Animals lose the use of their back or front legs for many reasons. These include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, disc disease, cervical disc disease, ruptured disc, paralysis, spinal cord injuries, fractured back, neuropathy, arthritis, nerve degeneration, spinal lesion, spondylosis, DM, neuropathy, intervertebral problems, cruciate ligament, ACL, nerve, degeneration, wobblers, tumors, cancer, neurological, osteoarthritis, lesions, and much more. “One day Oscar was walking through the living room when he let out a ‘yelp’ and sat down. He wasn’t able to get up. The vet was able to determine what was wrong either. I put him in a dog wheelchair and he was able to get around. It went on like this for two months. Suddenly, one day, he just got up and started walking again. We still don’t know what happened, but if he had not been in the cart his muscles would have degenerated and he probably never would have walked again.” The purpose of a pet wheelchair is to replace the function of the front or back legs with wheels. These wheels are held in place by a frame. The dog sits in or is strapped to the frame. There are several methods. Wheelchairs for dogs | Fixed Saddle: Eddie’s Wheels uses a fixed saddle type of seat. | | Contoured Padded Rings: K9 Carts uses a different strategy. These dog carts use rubber coated cables. These are flexible enough to conform to the bone structure of the animal. |
| Doggon Wheels, and many other carts use a sling Support system. This works like a piece of clothing that the dog wears and clips into the cart. | Walkin' Wheels wheelchair for dogs uses a sling support made of neoprene which holds the dog comfortably in the saddle.
The Frame:Most dog wheelchairs, as shown above, are made of a lightweight aluminum round tubing, held together with clips, bolts, or fixtures, with the exception of Walkin’ Wheels which is a high-quality textured aluminum in an elliptical shape for high strength. A few of the other types of carts can be made slightly larger or smaller with difficulty – tools and skill required. Walkin’ Wheels can be adjusted extremely easily, no tools required – with simple push-button clips.
Transportation and Shipping:Many of the carts, such as Eddies Wheels, Doggon Wheels, K9 Carts, and Deweys Wheelchairs for Pets can be disassembled for shipping and transportation. Eddie's Wheels carts are shipped fully assembled, except for having to screw the wheels on to the frame. Walkin' Wheels folds flat with a simple twist of a knob. It is recommended that when disassembling any dog wheelchair other than Walkin’ Wheels, careful diagrams be made and the parts labeled. Walkin’ Wheels comes with a tote bag for easy transportation. The ability to fold Walkin’ Wheels flat makes it less expensive to ship and easy to fit in the trunk of a car. Only the smallest of the other carts could fit in the trunk or back seat.
"Often, when I walk Woody he starts out OK, but then gets tired. It's great to be able to carry along Walkin' Wheels with us in the tote bag so that we can put ii on him when he needs it. Let's me take longer walks!"
Measuring and Ordering: All of the carts except Walkin’ Wheels are custom made carts. This means that almost a dozen exacting measurements must be taken, sent to the manufacturer, and analyzed so that the cart can be made. Walkin’ Wheels is adjustable so that you can fit it to your dog in minutes without tools. Eddies Wheels, Doggon Wheels, and K9 carts can take more than a week to build and ship. Walkin’ Wheels can be shipped next day.
Return Policies, Guarantees on Dog Wheelchairs:Eddies Wheels has a lifetime guarantee except for the wheels (which can be replaced). Most other carts have a 90 day or one year warranty. The wheels themselves on Walkin’ Wheels will wear depending on use, but replacement wheels can be ordered on-line for $9.95. Wheels are replaced easily by removing a bolt.
